Brake pads are a component of disc brakes used in automotive and other applications. Brake pads are composed of steel backing plates with friction material bound to the surface that faces the disc brake rotors.

Material of Brake Pad Set
Non-metallic materials – These are made from a combination of various synthetic substances bonded into a composite, principally in the form of cellulose, aramid, PAN, and sintered glass. They are gentle on rotors, but produce a fair amount of dust, thus having a short service life.
Semi-metallic materials – Synthetics mixed with varying proportions of flaked metals. These are harder than non-metallic pads, more fade-resistant and longer lasting, but at the cost of increased wear to the rotor/drum which then must be replaced sooner. They also require more actuating force than non-metallic pads in order to generate braking torque.
Fully metallic materials – These pads are used only in racing vehicles, and are composed of sintered steel without any synthetic additives. They are very long-lasting, but require more force to slow a vehicle while wearing off the rotors faster. They also tend to be very loud.
Ceramic materials – Composed of clay and porcelain bonded to copper flakes and filaments, these are a good compromise between the durability of the metal pads, grip and fade resistance of the synthetic variety. Their principal drawback, however, is that unlike the previous three types, despite the presence of the copper (which has a high thermal conductivity), ceramic pads generally do not dissipate heat well, which can eventually cause the pads or other components of the braking system to warp.
A braking system consists of a pair of brake pads, a brake disc and a brake calliper for each wheel.
The pads are fitted in the calliper with their friction material almost touching the two sides of the brake disc.
When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic fluid in the calliper pushes each brake pad against each side of the rotating brake disc. This results in friction which slows down and eventually stops the vehicle.
How long do brake pads last? There are no hard and fast rules on this. A set of brake pads can last from anywhere between 30,000 and 70,000 miles – possibly more.A major factor in the lifespan of the pads is down to the way the vehicle is driven.

Precautions for use of Brake Pad Set
Squealing noises. This is commonly because brake pads are worn out, although sometimes brakes can make noise and still be in good shape.
Grinding noises. It happens especially when the brake pads and rotors are metal-on-metal.
Brake fluid leaks. Fluid leaks at the wheel often indicate a leaking seal on a brake caliper.
Vibrations when stopping. Badly worn, contaminated, or warped brake rotors can cause a shudder or steering wheel vibration when you press the pedal.
Longer stopping distances. This is because the friction isn’t as effective as it should be, and it could be for almost any reason.
Diagnosing problems with your brakes almost always requires a visual inspection. Lift the vehicle and remove the wheels, then inspect the brake pad and rotor thicknesses and condition, and check for leaks at brake hoses and calipers.
