Transmission System Introduction

For front-engine, rear-wheel drive vehicles, the torque generated by the engine is transmitted to the rear wheels through the clutch, gearbox, universal joint, drive shaft, main reducer, differential, and half-axle in sequence, so the rear wheels are also called drive wheels. The drive wheels get torque and give the ground a backward force, which causes the ground to produce a forward reaction force on the drive wheels. This reaction force is the driving force of the car. The front wheels of the car generally have no direct power connection with the transmission system, so they are called driven wheels.
The composition and layout of the transmission system vary with the type of engine, installation location, and different uses of the car. For example, off-road vehicles mostly use four-wheel drive, so transfer cases and other assemblies are added to its transmission system. For front-engine, front-wheel drive vehicles, there are no devices such as drive shafts in its transmission system.
